NWFD Event
Over 70 Finance Directors attended our event on 13th December at Farrington Lodge in Leyland.
The presentations included a tax and accounts update and a summary of the current mergers and acquisitions market. Kathryn Hill, Finance Director of Crown Paints and NWFA Finance Director of the year 2011 gave her thoughts on improving business performance.
The NW FD Network is run in association with AFR Consulting, Moore and Smalley and Barclays Corporate. Our mission is to help finance directors and senior financial controllers continue their personal development.

Tax and Business Strategies Seminar
This seminar held at Garstang Country Hotel and Golf Club on 22 November 2011 gave business owners, managers and finance directors advice on how to reduce their tax liability and make their business and personal pension funds work harder. The presentations, delivered by experienced professionals were punctuated with realistic examples of how different tax planning opportunities and pension schemes work in practice.

Getting the most from your GP accounts software package
The Moore and Smalley healthcare team held a number of free workshop looking at getting the most from your GP accounts software. The team looked at using the system to its full potential, getting the right information from the package and using it to increase profitability. The workshops took place in Blackpool, Kendal, Preston and Nottingham.

The Fylde team hosted a charity quiz night raising money for Fylde Coast YMCA on Tuesday 20th September. Teams from HSBC, Yorkshire Bank, Napthens, Handelsbanken, Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Moore and Smalley and Fylde Coast YMCA took part in the quiz which was won by Yorkshire Bank.

Changes to Solicitors' Accounts Rules
Lancaster, Morecambe & District Law Society and Moore and Smalley Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors teamed up to bring legal practices a presentation on the new Solicitors’ Accounts Rules coming into force on October 6, 2011. The event was held on Tuesday 6th September.

The NW Finance Director Network Budget 2011 Event
Following the huge success of the network’s launch in November 2010, attended by 80 finance professionals, the NW FD network cam back for its second successful event.
On Thursday March 24, 2011 at Farrington Lodge, Leyland, this event included a special analysis of the announcements made in George Osborne’s Budget on Wednesday March 23, 2011, his first since the Emergency Budget was delivered on June 23, 2010. Our speakers also gave an insight into interest rate management and foreign exchange risks.

Joined up business thinking seminar: Business Expansion - Getting it Right This seminar took place in Kendal on Thursday 30 September 2010 and was run in conjunction with Temple Heelis Commercial. It gave business leaders the knowledge and confidence to take their business to the next level and presenters also shared their expertise on the best way to structure a business ready for a future sale.

Charity Seminar - The charitable sector has undergone significant change in the last year, and this process of change seems set to continue throughout 2010. To keep our contacts within the sector up to date with the latest developments, as well as the impact they will have on the role of a trustee, we held two free seminars for our charity contacts.

Lancashire and The Fylde Tourism Roundtable- on 29 June 2010. Moore and Smalley hosted a special event that brought together regional leisure sector business owners and tourism representatives to talk about the future of tourism in the area and discuss ways to boost the visitor economy.
Race Night for CancerCare - 10 June 2010. Moore and Smalley co-hosted a charity 'wacky races' night and raised �2,095 for CancerCare.
Opportunity or Risk? What does the Legal Services Act mean for your firm? - 8th June 2010. The legal profession is facing profound change which emanates from a variety of sources. Moore and Smalley joined together with Preston Law Society and St Johns Buildings to discuss the future shape of the legal profession and provide some practical steps firms can take to survive and prosper from these changes.
Knowledge is Power- 9 June 2010. Creative Lancashire hosted a second event specifically aimed at the Digital and Creative Sector. The event was held at the New Continental in Preston.
Charity Quiz Night in Kendal - 27 April 2010, in the Beer Hall at Hawkshead Brewery, Staveley. Teams from local businesses put their general knowledge to the test in a fun evening raising �289 for Nurture Lakeland.
Charity Quiz Night on The Fylde - 2010 is the 15th anniversary of the Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants (AISMA). To celebrate this we held a charity quiz night and raised over �550 for M�decins Sans Fronti�res (also known as Doctors without Borders) on Wednesday 21 April at the Glendower Hotel in Lytham.
Top Tips to Improve your Bottom Line - Moore and Smalley directors, Judith Dugdale and Rachel Marsdin, gave a presentation at the Bay Tourism Association's AGM. On 14 March 2010 at Lancaster House Hotel the two leisure and tourism specialists advised business owners not only how to improve their bottom line but also how to minimise their tax bill so that the maximum amount of profit was retained.
Knowledge is Power - This event was specifically for businesses in the digital and creative sector. It was held at the Storey Creative Industries Centre in Lancaster on 11 March 2010 and gave 25 local businesses an opportunity to meet and put their questions to specialist advisors to the sector. Representatives from Creative Lancashire, Business Link, North West Vision & Media, Moore and Smalley Digital & Creative team, Lancaster University's InfoLab21 and Jobling and Knape Solicitors were on hand to advise on issues such as intellectual property rights, raising finance, claiming research and development tax credits, business growth, business structures and innovation vouchers.
Key to Success - On the 9 March 2010 we held a free seminar for hotel owners and managers at Windermere Yacht Club. This seminar brought together specialists who understand the current hotel economic environment, they provided an outlook for the sector in 2010 and gave useful tips and advice on business planning, saving tax and maximising profitability to 50 delegates.
Free GP Seminar - In March we teamed up with George Davies Solicitors and Royal Bank of Scotland and organised a fantastic free seminar, focusing on the issues facing GPs when retiring from partnerships. The seminar was held at the Farington Lodge in Preston on Wednesday 3rd March.
Cumbrian Tourism Roundtable Event - we held a roundtable event in Kendal on 3 February bringing several regional tourism representatives together to discuss the current and future issues affecting the sector including how the North West can build on the relative success of 2009, the impact of the devastating floods in November 2009 and the prospects for 2010 and beyond. Property & Enterprise Forum - On the 28 January, Stewart Case made a presentation at this event which looked at how businesses in the property sector can prepare for the upturn as we come out of the recession.

Care Home Round Table - We held an event specifically for the care home sector on 25 November 2009. The event focused on the impact of the recession on funding and the need to diversify.
